Home Made: Bake Your Breakfast in Bread
Bake your breakfast–right inside a delicious loaf of Italian bread. This feast is fit to feed guests–and your family will no doubt love it, too.
You can make it with whole eggs and meat–bacon, ham, or sausage–or you can use an egg substitute or just egg whites and skip the meat completely. Either way, it will be a hit with all you serve.
One large loaf of Italian bread will serve four people. In addition to the bread and eggs, and the meat if you are so inclined, you will need the following items to make this tasty creation.
- Milk
- Butter
- mushrooms
- A red bell peppers
- Half a small onion
- Shredded cheddar cheese
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Beat a dozen eggs or the equivalent in egg substitute or egg whites with milk. Set aside.
Cut a wedge out of the top of the loaf of Italian bread. Pull out some of the soft white bread inside. Butter the inside of the loaf, as well as the bottom.
In a small skillet, saute the sliced mushrooms, red bell pepper, and chopped onion. Cook until just tender.
Add the vegetables to the egg mixture. Place the loaf of Italian bread on a cookie sheet lined with tin foil. Pour the egg mixture into the inside of the loaf of Italian bread. Sprinkle about a cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the egg mixture and the bread.
Bake for about 30 minutes. Insert a sharp knife into the middle of the eggs. If the knife comes out clean the eggs are done.
Allow the breakfast loaf to cool for about ten minutes, then slice it into four pieces with a serrated knife.
Serve with a side of fresh fruit.
This Italian loaf doesn’t need to be for breakfast only. It makes a hearty lunch or dinner, too.
